What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your website, your schema, your knowledge graph presence, and your off-site citations so AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot) cite your business when prospects ask category questions.

The data
Four numbers that explain why AEO matters now.
13B
ChatGPT receives roughly 13 billion visits per month worldwide as of Q1 2026, putting it inside the top 10 most-visited websites globally.
60%
Roughly 60% of US adults aged 18 to 29 use generative AI at least weekly, and 39% of adults overall use it at least once a week.
$235
The average missed call for a home service business costs $235 in lost lifetime revenue, based on average ticket size and conversion data from the contractor space.
92%
An estimated 92% of AI answer engines rely on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Crunchbase as baseline reference sources, making knowledge graph presence the single highest-leverage AEO action.
The 8 signals
Every AEO audit measures the same eight things.
- AI Appearance. Whether OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Perplexity name you when asked about your category.
- Schema Markup. JSON-LD structured data on the page: Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Article.
- Content Structure. Heading hierarchy, FAQ patterns, list density, claim-to-sentence ratio.
- Citability. Definitive, sourced claims AI engines lift verbatim.
- Knowledge Graph Presence. Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Crunchbase profiles.
- Authority Signals. HTTPS, About page, contact, named founder, press mentions.
- AEO Hygiene. robots.txt allowing AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot), sitemap.xml, meta, canonical.
- Core Web Vitals. LCP, CLS, INP per Google PageSpeed.
Each signal is weighted differently. Schema and Knowledge Graph carry the heaviest weight in our methodology because they are the easiest for an LLM to verify and the hardest for competitors to fake.
How to do it
An 8-step AEO plan you can run in 30 days.
Step 1
Run an AEO audit on your homepage
Paste your URL into a free AEO audit tool. You want to know where you score on the 8 signals: AI appearance, schema markup, content structure, citability, knowledge graph, authority, hygiene, and Core Web Vitals.
Step 2
Add structured data to your homepage
Paste Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage JSON-LD into the <head> of your homepage. This is the single highest-leverage technical move. Schema validators are free.
Step 3
Create a Wikidata entry for your business
Sign up at wikidata.org, click Create a new item, add label, description, official website (P856), founder (P112), and headquarters (P159). Aim for 6 to 10 statements.
Step 4
Claim or create your Crunchbase profile
Search crunchbase.com for your business. If it exists, claim it. If not, create it. Add team, funding (or 'bootstrapped'), and a 1-paragraph description.
Step 5
Publish one definitive-answer page
Pick the question your ideal customer types into ChatGPT. Write the most thorough, specific, sourced answer on the open web. Use FAQPage and HowTo schema. Link to it from every other page on your site.
Step 6
Rewrite your homepage in sourced voice
Replace every adjective claim with a number, a date, or a source. 'Trusted by hundreds' becomes 'Operating 240 client accounts as of May 2026'. AI engines reward specificity.
Step 7
Earn 3 to 5 third-party citations this quarter
Pitch one guest piece to an industry publication, get listed in 2 to 3 niche directories, earn one podcast appearance with show notes that link back to your site.
Step 8
Re-audit and measure the lift
Run the audit again in 30 days. Aim for a 15 to 25 point bump. Anything more is exceptional.
Frequently asked
AEO questions, answered.
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your website, your schema, your knowledge graph presence, and your off-site citations so that AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot) confidently name your business when prospects ask category questions like 'who is the best plumber in Bellevue' or 'best CRM for real estate teams'.
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO optimizes for a results page of 10 blue links that the user clicks. AEO optimizes for a single synthesized answer that may or may not link out. SEO rewards keywords and backlinks. AEO rewards structured data, factual density, knowledge graph presence, and citability.
How does Google AI Overviews differ from ChatGPT search?
Google AI Overviews still surfaces source links and ranks pages by traditional SEO signals plus AI-extracted relevance. ChatGPT search and Perplexity treat the open web as a knowledge graph: they synthesize an answer first, then attribute. The same page can rank well in one and never appear in the other.
What is a knowledge graph and why does it matter for AEO?
A knowledge graph is a structured database of entities (people, companies, products, places) and their relationships. Wikipedia and Wikidata are the open versions every major AI engine reads. If your business has no Wikidata entry, no Crunchbase profile, and no Wikipedia page, AI engines have nothing structured to attach to your name, which makes them reluctant to cite you.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Schema and on-page fixes show up in AI engine answers within 2 to 6 weeks. Knowledge graph entries (Wikidata, Crunchbase) take 30 to 90 days to propagate into LLM training and retrieval. Citability improvements (sourced claims, definitive answer pages) compound over 3 to 6 months as more pages link back.
What is the single highest-leverage AEO action for a small service business?
Create a Wikidata entry for your business. It takes about 45 minutes, costs nothing, and most AI engines treat Wikidata as baseline truth. Pair it with a claimed Crunchbase profile and you have done the two most-cited knowledge-graph moves an LLM looks for.
Do I still need to do SEO if I do AEO?
Yes. Traditional search (Google web) still drives the majority of qualified service-business traffic in 2026. AEO is additive. The signals overlap heavily (schema, page speed, content structure), but the optimization targets are different and you need both for the next 3 to 5 years.
Can I do AEO without a developer?
Most of it, yes. Creating a Wikidata entry, claiming Crunchbase, publishing a definitive-answer page, rewriting your About page in sourced voice, and adding FAQ schema can all be done by the business owner. JSON-LD schema requires someone who can paste code into the <head> of your site or a content management system that supports it.
